Reasons to Visit Tenerife

The Canary Islands is a region of Spain that is located in the Atlantic Ocean, as an archipelago that includes different territories separated by water but together in legal terms. Tenerife is the biggest, most populated and relevant of these islands, along with Gran Canaria while Fuerteventura and La Gomera are smaller in size and number of inhabitants.

Tenerife is an absolute paradise for many reasons; weather, destinations, coastlines and beaches, culture, gastronomy, activities and sports, exotic atmosphere, tourist infrastructure, architecture and many more are outstanding characteristics that the island meet all together, becoming the ideal place to have a vacation, honeymoon or romantic getaway. Here are a few reasons to visit Tenerife:

Macizo de Anaga

The Macizo de Anaga is an historical and natural region that is located in Tenerife, specifically to the northeast. This macizo is a gigantic mountain formation that is at least nine million years old, so it is of the most ancient terrains in the island. In 1994, the Spanish state declared it as Rural and Natural Park of Anaga, while in 2015 it was declared as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Surpassing the 14.000 hectares and reaching 1020 meters above sea level on its highest point where the Cruz de Taborno is, the Macizo de Anaga covers the island from Punta de Anaga at the northeast to Cruz Del Carmen at the southwest, with amazing regions in between that are: Pico Del Inglés, Chinobre, Pico Limante and of course including the previously mentioned Cruz Del Taborno and Cruz del Carmen.

Due to the natural conditions and characteristics of the macizo, such as abrupt geography and diversity of surfaces, the region has very few population and perfect ground for activities. For example, hiking is the discipline to carry out with over 30 roads that were created for such purposes, along with others that visitors use to practice excursions: Camino de Abicore, Camino de la Costa, Camino Del Tomadero, among others.

Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Between February and March, in the island is celebrated the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife as the second in importance after the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, which is not small talk. For a week, every year people of Tenerife leave their houses and enjoy a cultural party and celebration that since 1980 is considered International Tourist Interest Party in Spain, the only one with such certification.

This carnival celebration carried out in the island can be divided into two: official carnival with scheduled events as costume contests, murgas, music presentations, bands, choreography and float contests, along with a general theme that is chosen before the celebration starts and so everybody is matched in clothes and other elements.

The other part of the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the one considered unofficial, carried out by people that make the party of their own with different cultural elements, as well as partying and celebrating with loudness. During this time, nobody works on the island so that everyone can attend the festival. Tourism and visitors increase during this time of the year.

Teide National Park

Speaking about reasons to visit Tenerife, the Teide National Park is one of them, if not the most clear one due to the importance and possibilities of this destination. The Teide is a volcanic formation that happens to be the third biggest mountain of its type or volcano in the world, only being surpassed by two located in Hawaii.

This park is the oldest of the Canary Islands and third in Spain and in 2012 the mountain was declared World Heritage Site UNESCO. The Teide National Park is a very diverse destination in Tenerife, reaching its highest point up to 3.718 meters and giving life to hundreds of plant species and animals, along with other amazing benefits the Teide offers.

Unsurprisingly, this place is visited by two million people at least every year that go to: Roque Cinchado, Tempete, Falda De Teide, Pico Viejo, Minas de San Jose, and the cableway or Teleférico Del Teide. All of these places are inside the Teide National Park, with proper characteristics, ground and exotic views and activities to enjoy.
